What to wear?
When planning outfits for your family portraits, I always recommend keeping things light, simple, and neutral. Soft, natural tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family’s connection rather than the clothes. Think creams, beiges, soft grays, light blues, and gentle pastels. Avoid heavy patterns or bright colors, and instead choose pieces that coordinate rather than match exactly—this creates a cohesive look that still feels natural and effortless.
For moms, a solid or subtly patterned dress in a light, flowing fabric always photographs beautifully. If you prefer something more casual, a simple blouse with light-colored jeans is perfect. Children can be dressed in similar tones and textures to the parents—think soft knits, linen, or cotton for a timeless, comfortable look. Dads can keep it classic with khakis, navy or light denim and a plain neutral shirt in cream, gray, or taupe.
The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and like themselves. When you feel good, it shows in your photos. And if you’d like some extra help putting everything together, I’m always happy to help style your family and even offer suggestions from my studio wardrobe.
